The company said in a news release that it "has launched a new drug to treat erectile dysfunction that is now available over-the-counter."
The drug, called Viagra, is the only drug for which patients with diabetes can get a prescription.
"The Viagra prescription is not an automatic medication," said Richard C. Smith, Pfizer's chairman and chief executive.
Pfizer was originally granted permission to market the drug in 1998, but it was later granted additional permission by the Food and Drug Administration. It now has a marketing exclusivity for Viagra in the United States.
The new drug's patent for Viagra expires in 2014.
